My Honest Sandals Ochi Review: Rooms, Restaurants, Golf and Resort Tips

Sandals Ochi has a reputation.

It is often described as one of the liveliest and the most affordable resorts in the Sandals portfolio — but that doesn't tell the entire story. After staying there myself, I discovered a resort that can feel completely different depending on which side you book and how you choose to spend your vacation. Read on for my complete Sandals Ochi review.

You can spend the afternoon at a lively beach club, order drinks from a swim-up bar and end the night inside a hidden speakeasy.... You can also retreat to a quiet Hillside villa where the loudest sounds are tree frogs and water flowing into your private pool (seriously, take me back so I can record these sounds for sleeping at home!!)

That contrast is what makes Sandals Ochi so interesting — and why choosing the correct room is particularly important here.

I traveled to Jamaica to attend the 22nd Annual Sandals USA Travel Advisor Golf Tournament and stayed in the Butler Village on the Hillside, while another advisor in our group stayed on the Riviera Seaside. Experiencing both sections gave me firsthand knowledge of this resort. Now I'm bringing it back to you, to let you know exactly who should consider Sandals Ochi, where you should stay, and what you need to know before arriving!

My First Impression of Sandals Ochi

Sandals Ochi is an excellent choice for travelers who want choices!

It offers a younger, livelier atmosphere than many Sandals resorts, numerous pools, extensive dining, an energetic beach club and some of the brand’s most interesting nightlife. It can also offer an impressive amount of privacy if you select one of the Hillside villas.

I would recommend Sandals Ochi for:

  • Couples who want a fun, social resort

  • Groups of friends or couples traveling together

  • Golf trips, even those where not everyone plans to golf

  • Travelers who prioritize pools, dining and entertainment

  • Couples who want to try butler service or a private-pool accommodation at a more approachable price

  • Honeymooners who like privacy but do not want an entirely quiet resort

  • Travelers who want plenty to do without leaving the property

I would not choose it first for someone whose number-one priority is a long, uninterrupted Caribbean beach or a small resort that can be explored entirely on foot.

The resort’s size and layout are important considerations — but they are also responsible for much of its variety!

Since this is a FULL review, feel free to skip ahead to the section you need!

Sandals Ochi Hillside vs. Seaside

The first thing to understand is that Sandals Ochi is divided into two primary experiences: the Riviera Seaside and the Hillside Butler Village and Great House area.

The Riviera Seaside places guests closer to the beach, waterfront restaurants, bars and much of the resort’s energy. It feels more like a traditional beachfront all-inclusive resort.

The Hillside is lush, peaceful and more residential. The villas are tucked into tropical landscaping and feel surprisingly removed from the activity below. Some pools are completely surrounded by trees, giving a great amount of privacy.

Guests travel between the two sides using Sandals’ complimentary Hop shuttle. Something to note is that you really can't walk between the two... without crossing an actual road. It's not really a case of "we can walk, but it's just a long walk" — you really actually should NOT attempt to walk it.

This means room selection is about more than the view or service level. You are also selecting the atmosphere you want immediately outside your door.

Choose the Seaside if your priority is convenient beach access and being close to most of the activity. Choose the Hillside if you want privacy, tropical surroundings and the ability to retreat from the livelier areas of the resort.

My Sandals Ochi Butler Villa

I stayed in one of the recently renovated Hillside villas, and it completely changed my perception of Sandals Ochi... Where do I even start? I loved this room category SO much.

My villa contained four separate one-bedroom suites positioned around a private pool. Sandals Ochi also offers villas with two-suite configurations, making these accommodations especially interesting for couples or friends traveling together.

My suite felt fresh, light and calm. Some of Sandals’ older accommodations are known for darker mahogany furniture, but this room used softer, neutral colors that made it feel much more current. It had been renovated so recently that I could still smell fresh paint!

The new air-conditioning system deserves its own mention. There was one unit in the bedroom and another in the main sitting area, and the room became genuinely cold —which matters to me because I am a hot sleeper... this room passes the A/C test with flying colors.

The living area was one of my favorite features. It included comfortable seating and a small bar area with coffee, the mini-refrigerator, and liquor. I invited friends staying on the Seaside up to the villa, and it became an ideal place to gather before going back out to dinner or evening entertainment!

These villas are offered within Sandals’ elevated service categories and include upgraded in-room amenities. Depending on the exact room category booked, clients may receive Club Sandals or Butler-Level benefits.

For groups, this villa configuration has tremendous potential! Multiple couples can reserve the suites within the same villa and share the pool and common environment while all having separate bedrooms and bathrooms. It feels more like renting a private Caribbean home —but with the restaurants, bars, entertainment and inclusions of a major all-inclusive resort.

The key is coordinating the room categories carefully. If a group wants exclusive use of the pool, I verify how many individual suites share that villa and whether the group can reserve every unit attached to it!

Sandals Ochi Rooms and Butler Suites

I also toured the Romeo and Juliet Butler Suite, which felt like Sandals Ochi’s answer to a private honeymoon retreat. This is absolutely the room I'm suggesting to you if you want a room that you really never have to leave... because sometimes that's EXACTLY the room you want.

These suites are located farther up the Hillside and have a completely enclosed outdoor area with a private pool space. The enclosed setting provides genuine privacy rather than simply placing a pool outside a guest room where other travelers can walk past it.

It reminded me of the experience offered by a Sandals rondoval: romantic, secluded and very self-contained. Your neighbors will have a similar configuration in a standalone suite next to yours... so they're not connected to your room. I'm not going to say it's entirely soundproof. But it's visually private.

This would be one of my preferred Sandals Ochi room categories for honeymooners or couples celebrating an anniversary who want privacy but still enjoy having a lively resort waiting when they decide to leave their suite.

Is Sandals Ochi Really a Party Resort?

Yes — but you have control over how much of that atmosphere you experience.

Sandals Ochi attracts a younger and more social crowd than some of the brand’s quieter properties. There are pool activities, live music, theme nights, entertainment and a beach-club atmosphere. This is not the resort I would choose for someone who wants complete silence everywhere they go.

However, the party is not in your face throughout the entire resort, either.

On the Hillside, I didn't feel as though I were staying at a party resort at all. The villa area was peaceful and romantic, with tropical vegetation, private pools and the sounds of running water and tree frogs...

That makes Ochi a particularly good match for groups with different vacation personalities. Or for destination weddings, where guests really want varying vibes and accommodations. The social travelers can head to the Beach Club for entertainment, while anyone ready for a quieter evening can return to the Hillside.

You don't have to choose between a lively resort and a private retreat. With the right room location, Sandals Ochi provides both.

Pools and Beaches at Sandals Ochi

Sandals Ochi advertises 105 pools, but it is important to understand that this total includes the numerous private and semi-private pools associated with the Hillside villas. It does not mean there are 105 large PUBLIC resort pools.

Guests will find several main pool environments, including social pools with swim-up bars and quieter options. The private villa pools are a major reason the total is so high.

The beach is attractive, but it is not Sandals Ochi’s defining feature. It's actually divided into smaller cove-like sections rather than forming one long, sweeping shoreline like the beaches at Sandals Negril or Beaches Negril. If a client tells me the beach is the single most important element of the vacation, I would compare Ochi with other Sandals resorts before recommending it.

If the client wants a combination of pools, dining, nightlife, golf and activities — and considers the beach one part of the trip rather than the entire reason for traveling — Ochi becomes much more compelling!

My Favorite Sandals Ochi Restaurants

Dining variety is one of Sandals Ochi’s greatest strengths. The resort currently lists 16 restaurants and 11 bars, with options distributed among the hillside, Riviera Seaside and Ochi Beach Club areas.

Guests can choose from Caribbean, Italian, French, Asian, seafood, sushi, pizza, barbecue and casual beachfront dining. Because the resort is so spread out, it is helpful to consider location when planning meals rather than crossing the property unnecessarily several times per day.

Restaurants include experiences such as:

  • Kelly’s Dockside for dinner over the water

  • Kimonos for an interactive teppanyaki meal

  • Soy for sushi

  • Le Gourmand for French cuisine

  • Valentino’s for Italian dining

  • The Jerk Shack for casual Jamaican flavors

  • Neptune’s for Mediterranean-inspired beachfront dining

  • Casual pizza, poolside grills and late-night options

Le Gourmand: French Onion Soup, Escargot de Bourgogne, and Chateaubriand

My favorite meal: If we’re judging strictly by the food, Le Gourmand was my favorite meal of the trip. This was my first experience with escargot, and my travel bestie — who knows far more about escargot than I do — said it was the best she has ever had. That has to count for something!

My friend ordered the duck... it was flavorful, incredibly tender and practically fell off the bone. I’m not usually a duck person, but even I thought it was fabulous. I ordered the Chateaubriand for my entrée, and it arrived cooked exactly as I requested — which, as anyone who travels frequently knows, can sometimes be hit or miss at an all-inclusive resort.

The biggest surprise, though, was the French onion soup. My mother-in-law’s version has always been the gold standard, so I certainly didn’t expect to discover a new favorite in Jamaica. But Le Gourmand now officially holds the title of my favorite restaurant French onion soup during travel.... It was absolutely perfect!!

Jerk chicken with festival and dipping sauce served at The Jerk Shack at Sandals Ochi
The Jerk Shack

Best casual lunch: The Jerk Shack wins this category every time. I am completely obsessed with jerk chicken and festival, and this spot never disappoints. It's casual, flavorful and exactly what I want to eat while I’m in Jamaica. Honestly, I could have eaten lunch here every day and been perfectly happy.

Sunset dining over the Caribbean Sea at Kelly’s Dockside restaurant at Sandals Ochi
Kelly's Dockside

Best atmosphere: Kelly’s Dockside was romantic, breezy and absolutely lovely. I wasn’t traveling for romantic reasons on this trip, but I would immediately put this on the must-do list for clients visiting with their significant other. It also works beautifully for groups — our table of seven was comfortable, and the setting made the evening feel special without being overly formal. Between the breeze and the restaurant’s location right over the water, the atmosphere is perfect for so many occasions.

What I would skip or order differently: The fish tacos at Tapas on the Riviera. They weren’t bad, they just weren’t anything memorable — and mine took close to 50 minutes to come out for two fish tacos. They also didn’t include guacamole, which was mildly devastating to me at the time (I'm totally being sarcastic, I survived). But honestly, I also have to take some responsibility here because I went to Jamaica and ordered tacos. Next time, I’m sticking with the Jamaican food and calling this one a lesson learned!

With such a large selection, travelers staying only four or five nights won't experience everything. This is one of the reasons I help clients identify their priority restaurants in advance and understand which ones require reservations or resort-evening attire!

Bars, Entertainment and Nightlife

The Rabbit Hole is one of Sandals Ochi’s signature experiences and the Caribbean’s first speakeasy. Guests need the nightly password to enter, which adds to the fun without making the experience feel overly formal!

Inside, the atmosphere changes completely. The setting is intimate and theatrical, with specialty cocktails and live entertainment inspired by the 1920s. The talent was unbelievable each time we visited... truly some incredibly talented vocalists in here!

The resort also offers swim-up bars, piano music, karaoke, waterfront cocktails and evening entertainment. Whether you want to stay out dancing or have one quiet drink overlooking the water... there are more than enough options to avoid doing the same thing every night.

My favorite bar: Ochi Beach Club Bar. This is where you go when you want the full Jamaica vacation vibe — lively, energetic, and literally steps from the ocean. Grab a drink, listen to the music, and take in the views. It’s fun during the day, the location is hard to beat, and it just feels like Jamaica.

Honorable mention to my own Hillside villa's private pool. With Butler service, this can be your own chill "bar" whenever you want!

Drinks: Pink Panther from Ocean Beach Bar, and Blue Mountain Coffee (found in rooms and throughout the resort)

Drink I would order again: Fresh coconuts with Coco Mania rum! This isn't going to be found everywhere. I had it at an event. But... if you see it, definitely get it. Other than that, I would say the Pink Panther from the Ocean Beach Bar. And of course, Blue Mountain Coffee found all over the resort!! One of my favorite perks of staying at Sandals and Beaches Resorts is their coffee.

Best nighttime experience: The Rabbit Hole. Hands down one of the coolest spots at Sandals Ochi. It’s a hidden ivy-covered speakeasy tucked away in the Hillside area of the resort, and even finding your way inside is part of the fun — you’ll need the password to get in. Once you’re through the door, it feels completely different from the rest of the resort: intimate, a little moody, and such a fun change of pace from the beach bars. The cocktails, live music, and whole speakeasy vibe make this an absolute must at least once during your stay.

Golf at Upton Estate Golf & Country Club

One of the reasons for my stay was the 22nd Annual USA Travel Advisor Golf Tournament, which gave me the chance to experience another side of Sandals Ochi.

Green fees and round-trip transportation to nearby Upton Estate Golf & Country Club are included for Sandals Ochi guests. Additional expenses may apply for items such as carts, caddies, club rentals, food, drinks or premium services.

The course gives travelers the opportunity to add golf to an adults-only Caribbean vacation without requiring everyone in the group to participate. Golfers can head to the course while everyone else enjoys the spa, beach, pools or resort activities, then reunite for dinner and evening entertainment!

That flexibility makes Sandals Ochi particularly attractive for:

  • Couples where only one person golfs

  • Country-club groups

  • Couples’ golf getaways

  • Birthday or milestone trips

  • Groups looking for more than a traditional beach vacation

What the course was like: It has hills. Like, actual hills. Upton Estate Golf & Country Club sits up in the hills of Ocho Rios, and that elevation is part of what makes the course so beautiful.

When I played, Jamaica was also in the middle of a drought — which felt a little strange considering we were there during hurricane season — so it wasn't the greenest I've ever seen it. The upside? The course played fast. The ground and greens were dry, the ball rolled, and we moved through our round pretty quickly.

But what stood out to me most was how peaceful it was. You're surrounded by tropical scenery, with beautiful views throughout the course, and even in the middle of a golf tournament it somehow still felt relaxing. On certain days, you can even see the ocean from certain points on the course.

And when you get to Hole 12, pay attention to the tree. You'll know exactly which one I mean when you see it. It's this huge, beautiful tree that completely commands the landscape and was easily one of my favorite views on the course.

What golfers should know: Here's the big one: you are required to have both a golf cart and a caddie at Upton Estate. Your green fees are complimentary when you're staying at a Sandals resort in Jamaica, and transfers are included from Sandals Ochi, Sandals Royal Plantation and Sandals Dunn's River. Currently, the mandatory cart fee is $30 per player and caddie service is $25 per player, with gratuity for your caddie additional. Club rentals are also available if you don't want to travel with your own clubs.

And before anyone sees "mandatory caddie" and thinks they don't need one: trust me on this one.

Dennis was our caddie, and I genuinely cannot imagine playing that course without him now. Your caddie isn't just carrying clubs or telling you where the next tee box is. They know this course — the hills, where you want your ball to land, and especially how those greens break. I'm pretty sure Dennis knows every single blade of grass on the course. Recent golfers say the same thing: the local course knowledge from the caddies makes a huge difference, particularly on Upton Estate's deceptive greens.

Dennis was so good that we're already requesting him for our next golf trip in October. So yes, the caddie is mandatory — but after playing with one here, I completely understand why.

What non-golfers can do during that time: This is actually one of my favorite things about planning a Sandals golf trip: everyone does not have to golf.

If your partner wants an early tee time and you'd rather spend your morning at the spa? Perfect. If half of your group wants to play and the other half wants absolutely nothing on their schedule beyond finding the best pool chair? Also perfect.

While the golfers are at Upton Estate, non-golfers can book a treatment at Red Lane Spa, spend the morning at the pool or beach, explore the resort, or turn it into an excuse to try another lunch spot. Then everyone can meet back up at the resort afterward.

That's what makes Sandals work so well for couples and group golf trips. It can be a golf trip without making the entire vacation about golf. The golfers get their round in, the non-golfers get a few hours of Caribbean vacation exactly the way they want it, and everyone comes back together for the pool, cocktails, dinner and the rest of the day.

What Is Included at Sandals Ochi?

Sandals Ochi is an adults-only all-inclusive resort, so guests receive considerably more than accommodations and meals. Standard inclusions include:

  • Meals and snacks

  • Unlimited alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages

  • In-room minibar (contents vary based on which room you're staying in!)

  • Multiple pools and whirlpools

  • Select land and water sports

  • Scuba diving for certified divers, subject to requirements and availability

  • Daytime and evening entertainment

  • Green fees at Upton Estate Golf & Country Club

  • Transportation between the resort and golf course

  • Round-trip airport transfers

  • Resort-wide Wi-Fi

  • Taxes and most gratuities

Spa treatments, optional excursions, private airport transfers, golf carts, caddies, rental equipment and certain premium experiences may cost extra. Butler gratuities are also not included for guests staying in butler accommodations.

Getting to Sandals Ochi from the Airport

Most travelers fly into Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay (MBJ). Complimentary resort transfers are included, and the drive to Ocho Rios generally takes approximately 90 minutes, although traffic can affect the timing.

Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ) is much closer to the resort, but it offers fewer flight options. Whether it makes sense will depend on the traveler’s home airport, schedule and available connections.

For clients arriving through Montego Bay, I also discuss Club Mobay! The arrival service can provide expedited assistance through the airport, while its departure lounge gives travelers a comfortable place to wait before flying home.

The drive from Montego Bay is longer than the transfer to resorts in Montego Bay itself, but it also places guests near popular Ocho Rios attractions such as Dunn’s River Falls and the Blue Hole.

Understanding the Hop Shuttle

The complimentary Hop shuttle connects Sandals Ochi’s Hillside and Seaside areas. Guests staying in the villas should expect to use it regularly for the beach, certain restaurants and some entertainment, but you do also have entertainment and dining options on the Hillside! The Hop picks up outside of the Hillside lobby, and drops off at the Ochi Beach Club and the Seaside lobby. It runs frequently, and we had no issues using it whatsoever!

I did not find the Hillside location to be a dealbreaker because I loved the privacy and atmosphere of the villa. However, clients should know about the layout before booking.

Someone who wants to step directly from their room onto the beach should stay on the Seaside. Someone who would rather have a quieter setting, private-pool options and lush tropical surroundings should strongly consider the Hillside and accept that the shuttle is part of the experience.

This is precisely why I do not recommend selecting a Sandals Ochi room based only on whichever category appears cheapest online... there's a bit more strategy that goes into selecting the best room for your stay at this resort.

What I Loved About Sandals Ochi

After experiencing the resort personally, these were the features that stood out most:

  • The choice between lively and peaceful environments

  • Recently refreshed Hillside villa accommodations

  • Excellent private-pool options

  • Strong value compared with many Sandals resorts

  • A large selection of restaurants and bars

  • Nightlife that continues after dinner

  • The Rabbit Hole speakeasy

  • Included golf privileges

  • A setup that works particularly well for groups

  • Proximity to popular Ocho Rios excursions

What Travelers Should Know Before Booking

No resort is right for every traveler, and these are the trade-offs I would discuss honestly:

  • The beach is smaller and more segmented than the beach at Sandals Negril.

  • The resort is large and divided between the Hillside and Seaside.

  • Hillside guests will use the Hop shuttle regularly.

  • Room categories vary significantly in style, location and renovation status.

  • The resort can be lively, particularly around the Ochi Beach Club and entertainment areas.

  • A short stay may not provide enough time to experience all the restaurants and amenities.

  • The transfer from Montego Bay is longer than transfers to Jamaica’s Montego Bay resorts.

None of these would prevent me from recommending Sandals Ochi. They simply determine which clients — and which room categories — are the best match.

Who Is Sandals Ochi Best For?

Sandals Ochi is a strong fit for travelers who say:

“We want a fun resort, but we still want somewhere private to retreat.”

“We care more about pools, restaurants and entertainment than having the biggest beach.”

“We are traveling with other couples and want accommodations where we can gather.”

“One of us wants to golf, but the other does not.”

“We want to experience Sandals without paying the price of one of the brand’s newest resorts.”

“We want a private pool or butler service at a more approachable price.”

Who May Prefer Another Sandals Resort?

I would compare other options for travelers who say:

“We want a small, intimate resort that is easy to walk.”

“The beach is the most important part of the vacation.”

“We do not want to use a shuttle.”

“We want the newest room design throughout the entire property.”

“We want a consistently quiet and romantic atmosphere everywhere we go.”

For these clients, Sandals Royal Plantation, Sandals Dunn’s River, Sandals Negril or another property may ultimately be a better fit depending on their priorities and budget.

Is Sandals Ochi Worth It? My Final Verdict

Sandals Ochi surprised me! I arrived knowing its reputation as a lively, value-oriented Sandals resort. I left thinking about the peaceful Hillside, the refreshed villa, the ice-cold bedroom, the private pool (I'm really never going to get over this feature) and how well the property can work for groups.

The resort’s greatest strength is not any one restaurant, bar or pool. It is the ability to build very different vacations within the same property.

You can choose a beachfront room and remain close to the action. You can reserve a Hillside villa and create a private retreat. You can golf in the morning, visit the beach club in the afternoon, have dinner over the water and finish the evening inside a hidden speakeasy.

Sandals Ochi is not the right resort for every client — but when the room and traveler are matched correctly, it offers an enormous amount of experience for the price.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sandals Ochi

Is Sandals Ochi adults-only?

Yes! Sandals Ochi is an adults-only resort designed primarily for couples. It can also work well for groups of couples and friends when the room arrangements are planned appropriately.

Is Sandals Ochi a party resort?

It is one of the livelier Sandals resorts, with active pools, a beach club and evening entertainment. However, quieter areas — particularly the Hillside villas — allow guests to escape the activity. On a scale of 1-10 in Caribbean party resorts... Ochi is a 5 or 6 out of 10. I was not overwhelmed with party-people-watching experiences here, but it was a nice balance!

Does Sandals Ochi have private pools?

Yes. Several Hillside villa categories have private or shared villa pools. It is important to check exactly how the pool is configured and how many suites share it before booking.

Does Sandals Ochi have a good beach?

The beach is attractive and the water can be calm, but the shoreline is divided into smaller sections. Travelers seeking a long, expansive beach may prefer Sandals Negril or another property.

Is golf included at Sandals Ochi?

Green fees and resort transportation to Upton Estate Golf & Country Club are included. Caddies, carts, rental clubs and other optional expenses may cost extra.

How far is Sandals Ochi from the airport?

The resort is generally around 90 minutes from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, depending on traffic. Ian Fleming International Airport is much closer but has limited flight availability.

Should I stay on the Hillside or Seaside?

Choose the Hillside for privacy, tropical surroundings and private-pool villa options. Choose the Seaside for convenient access to the beach, waterfront restaurants and more of the resort’s activity.

Ready to Decide Whether Sandals Ochi Is Right for You?

Choosing Sandals Ochi is not simply about selecting a date and finding the lowest-priced room. The resort’s different sections and room categories can create completely different vacations.

I help my clients compare the Hillside and Seaside, understand the service levels, select the right accommodation and take advantage of any available Sandals promotions. I can also coordinate flights, transfers, Club Mobay, golf, excursions and group arrangements.
